Congrats to Jessi, 5th PT to Become Certified in Lymphedema Training

We want to congratulate our PT Jessi on her recent passing of the Lymphedema Certification Course through Klose Training. Jessi is our fifth therapist to have gone through a rigorous lymphatic training course on Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

CDT is the most effective treatment to treat those with lymphatic disorders, according to Klose Training.  Lymphedema can be either congenital (present from birth) or can be the result of  damage to the lymphatic system.

Complete Decongestive Therapy contains four important steps:

1. The first step in reducing a limb with CDT is Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD for short. This is a type of “massage” that helps redirect lymph fluid back into healthy lymph vessels.

2. The second step is compression therapy, which can involve a series of appointments. The therapist does a unique bandaging technique onto the effected limb, with the pressure to help keep the fluid from re-accumulating where it once was before.

3. The third step involved in CDT is exercise. A few exercises may be given to the patient to do after the bandages are on (such as ankle pumps) to help with the movement and circulation of lymph fluids.

4. The last step, and perhaps most important, is skin care. In order to keep the affected limb from having any fungal or bacterial growth, it is important to keep the affected limb very clean to prevent a skin infection, such as cellulitis.

Using a combination of Complete Decongestive Therapy and some sort of compression garment/device to help keep swelling down is important for long-term success to prevent re-swelling.

What a gut wrenching injury and to have it replayed so many times…

Well, initially they were reporting that it was the end of this 49′rs career.  Add to that the abominable (yes, I agree) behavior of the Seahawks fans and some of their players, and it was just an overall downer.

It turns out that just the ACL and MCL were torn and they’re suggesting that it will take 9 months to rehab.  I wonder what we could do with such a special client!

GMO’s — what do you think?

This issue is not going away.  A new bill is before the legislature specifically dealing with farmed salmon and apples that are engineered not to go brown when they are cut.  What do you think?  Should food with Genetically Modified Organisms be labelled as such or does the cost of doing so get the manufacturer’s off the hook again?

Robby, PT Coaches Girls Soccer to National Title

Big congratulations to our very own Robby Trimbo, PT for coaching his U-18 girls premier team to a national title this past Monday in Boise, ID. The Columbia Timbers U-18 Red team qualified for the national tournament back in June, where they won the regional tournament in Seattle.

The Timbers youth program is no stranger to the U.S. Club soccer national tournament having qualified a team once before. However, this is the first time a Timbers club team has won the title.

The girls started play on Friday in a match against their soon-to-be final game competition, the Scorpions of St. Croix, Minnesota, in a 4-0 battle. Saturday turned out to be a draw at 0-0. Needing a win Sunday to continue in the tournament, the Reds pulled off a 1-0 win in the last two minutes of play, keeping them around for Monday’s finale.
